I have performed this piece in many concerts, in Prague, Kiev, Minsk & Perpignan.
And, it was meeting with the composer himself (after my performances) that I was enlightened on the way of performing it. But unfortunately I had no more chances after that.
This so special version was in fact Johnson own idea. When we met, I was really into Vexations and after hearing that, he said that if one would play the Chord very slowly, It could make a 7 hours version !
And this is really how i wanted to record this music. There are already 2 recordings of this piece at a fast speed, and I thought there was no need of a 3rd version. Instead, it is much more interesting to record it differently.

With this speed (it is "only" a 4 hours version) the music becomes much more meditative and eerie. No more jazz, but simply eerie.

I really hope one day to perform it in such a way on concert ! But in any case, i hope my recording will help Tom Johnson music to be much more known ! He is really an interesting composer with highly interesting concepts !

J'ai interprété cette pièce dans de nombreux concerts, à Prague, Kiev, Minsk & Perpignan.
Et, c'est en rencontrant le compositeur lui-même (après mes interprétations) que j'ai été éclairé sur la manière de l'interpréter. Mais malheureusement, je n'ai plus eu d'occasions de la jouer en concert depuis ce jour.
Cette version très spéciale est une idée de Johnson lui-même. Quand on s'est rencontré, j'étais vraiment fan des Vexations et après m'avoir écouté, il m'a expliqué que si quelqu'un jouait The Chord Catalogue très lentement, la durée pouvait avoisiner les 7 heures !
Et c'est vraiment comme ça que je voulais enregistrer cette musique. Il y a déjà 2 enregistrements de cette œuvre à grande vitesse, et je pensais qu'il n'y avait pas besoin d'une 3ème version. Il me semble qu' il est beaucoup plus intéressant de l'enregistrer différemment.

Avec cette vitesse (il s'agit "seulement" une version de 4 heures) la musique devient beaucoup plus méditative et inquiétante. Le coté jazz est complètement gommé, la musique devient sinistrement oppressante.

J'espère vraiment un jour pouvoir l'interpréter de cette façon en concert et qu'un festival sera assez curieux pour organiser une telle performance !
J'espère que mon enregistrement aidera la musique de Tom Johnson à être beaucoup plus connue ! C'est vraiment un compositeur intéressant avec des concepts très particuliers !
